Jamaica sweeps away many travel awards

The 2010 World Travel Awards Americas Gala, held on October 22 saw Jamaica walk away with many top honors in several key categories. Jamaica was recognized as the Caribbean’s Leading Destination for the fifth consecutive year, while the Jamaica Tourist Board was recognized for the fourth consecutive year as the Caribbean’s Leading Tourist Board.

Jamaica also won accolades in other categories specifically Caribbean’s Leading Cruise Destination, Caribbean’s Leading Cruise Port (Ocho Rios), Caribbean’s Leading Airport (Sangster International Airport) and Caribbean’s Leading Meetings & Conference Centre (Jamaica Conference Centre, Kingston).

Commenting on the felicitation, Tourism Minister, the Hon. Edmund Bartlett, said that the awards further highlighted that brand Jamaica towers in the Caribbean region. He also felt that the recognition achieved by the World Travel Awards was a matter of pride and it reflected the excellence and service quality assurance that visitors can expect when they visit Jamaica.

Jamaica’s Director of Tourism John Lynch said “We’re thrilled to again be recognized as a top Caribbean destination. These awards reaffirm that our tireless efforts to promote destination Jamaica, coupled with continued growth and refurbishment of our tourism infrastructure, have proven a successful strategy in positioning Jamaica as a tourism leader.”

Tourism is Jamaica’s main industry. The island welcomes more than one million visitors a year, a figure which the Jamaica tourism board is focusing on taking to two million annually. The nation welcomed its one millionth visitor in August and with the high season approaching, it seems likely to achieve its goal. In fact countries like Canada and the USA have increased the number of flights to cater to the people who plan their winter getaways to the island.

Jamaica believes in providing unique and personalized experiences to its visitors and accordingly offers a wide range of Jamaica accommodation rentals comprising private Jamaica villas, cottages and apartments for all tastes, group sizes and budgets. These rentals provide several value-added services such as airport transfers, transport to places of interest, arrangement of tours and so on.
